Kick off the new year early with traditional Japanese mochi making at MAIDO! in Ardmore. On Dec. 29, from 1-3 p.m., they will lead participants through the process and attendees will be sample to sample a variety of flavors. Mochitsuki is a traditional Japanese activity performed around the new year, where people use a hollowed tree trunk and a wooden mallet to pound a fresh rice cake called mochi.

The Farmer’s Room at Suburban Restaurant & Beer Garden will be open on New Year’s Eve from 5:30-9 p.m. for a prix fixe dinner, including complimentary champagne, for $75 per person. Delectable dinner options include lobster bisque or roasted beets to start, followed by short rib or grilled trout, and sweet desserts such as eggnog crème brûlée, peppermint pot du crème or cardamom-nutmeg crème Anglaise to top it off. Wine pairings are an additional $35. The restauanrt will also be hosting its inaugural New Year’s Day pajama brunch from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Indulge in all-you-can-drink Bloody Marys and mimosas for $14, then choose from the brunch menu or specials.

Wet Your Whistle at B2 Bluefin
Join B2 Bluefin in Bala Cynwyd on New Year’s Eve and sip from its whiskey-touring menu, which features a selection of whiskies from Japan, Taiwan, Scotland and Ireland, plus American rye whiskey and bourbon. There will be a prix fixe menu, as well.

Recover at Lucky’s Last Chance
If you find yourself in need on New Year’s Day, then Lucky’s Last Chance in Manayunk should be your first stop. Wear PJs to the White Dog Café
On Jan. 1, don’t bother changing out of your pajamas you. Instead, head over to the White Dog Café for the 30th annual New Year’s Day pajama brunch. You’ll also be supporting a good cause: All White Dog Café locations have partnered with Justin Jean Pajamas to help raise funds for Alpha Bravo Canine, a charity that trains service dogs for U.S. military veterans affected by PTSD and other serious injuries.

Head to a Conshy Girls restaurant in Conshohocken or Ambler for year-end and New Year’s Day festivities.
Southern Cross Kitchen kicks off the day with its brunch from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. For those with little ones, try the Kiddie New Year’s Eve celebration from 4-6:30 p.m., featuring a special kids’ menu, crafts, face painting, live music and toast when the “ball drops” at 6 p.m. Adults can also enjoy the full à la carte menu or a special New Year’s Eve menu from 5-11 p.m. Or, stop in the next morning from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. for brunch or dinner.
