Downingtown’s Station Taproom rolls out gastro goodness for diners from both near and far.

The Station Taproom’s Cuban panini.Being as far out as it is—just past Firecreek Restaurant + Bar and across from the Downingtown train station—it’s tough to think of the Station Taproom as a destination spot. But it’s certainly worth a visit if you’re out that way.

This ultra-relaxed spot offers a dozen robust, far-from-run-of-the-mill brews on tap and another 35 in bottles, plus Spanish hard cider, a well-conceived wine and whiskey list, and a selection of reasonably priced bourbon and scotch.

The setting at the Station Taproom mixes sleek and contemporary with old-fashioned neighborhood bar. The layout allows for a clear view into the kitchen, the source of this low-key establishment’s gastro-pub magic. The menu is tempting but not overly ambitious, and the prices are in line with most other casual eateries in the area.

By all accounts, the minted lamb burger is a standout, as are the finger-lickin’ amazing beef short-rib egg rolls, filled with tender meat braised in wine, and collard greens cooked with bacon. The accompanying horseradish sauce had a nice kick. Vegetarians will love the curried chickpea burger seasoned with Indian spices and topped with a refreshing mango chutney, all served on a soft brioche roll with hand-cut fries.
