Burn 600 Calories in Less Than an Hour

Wayne native Hilary Ryan opens MegaFormer Pilates studio in Wayne.

This Saturday, April 5, Hilary Ryan opens the doors of her new MegaFormer Pilates studio, Plank Fitness, for an Open House from 10 a.m. -4 p.m. prior to the official Grand Opening on Monday, April 7. Based in Wayne, the studio is the first of its kind in Pennsylvania offering the MegaFormer machine workout. MLT had the chance to chat with Ryan to get the lowdown on the workout revered from the likes of A-list celebrities to First Lady Michelle Obama.

MLT: What can people expect if they visit during the Open House this Saturday?

HR: I wanted to give the community an opportunity to come into the studio, look at the equipment and see exactly what we offer. Our instructors will be here and will be helping out if anyone wants to try the machines. I just want people to get a feel for the studio and experience how we are different from every other studio in the area.

MLT: So how is Plank different from every fitness studio around?

HR: Plank Fitness is Pennsylvania’s first MegaFormer studio. The MegaFormer is a 250-pound machine that offers a 50-minute, low-impact cardio workout. It allows you to strengthen, lengthen and tone while burning 600 calories in less than an hour. We also offer TRX and cardio mat Pilates classes, as well as Mommy and Me classes and a class we call Mega-60, which is 30 minutes of MegaFormer and 30 minutes of TRX.

MLT: Of all the different types of fitness studios you could have opened, why did you choose MegaFormer?

HR: I chose the MegaFormer because it’s such a strong piece of a equipment and because you’re able to efficiently get your workout done so quickly. I used to be a big runner and I would take Pilates classes and sometimes yoga. Rather than doing all these things and going to three different studios to get them all done I found the MegaFormer and realized I could get it all done in one 50-minute workout. My ultimate goal was always to offer the most efficient workout available.

MLT: How did you settle on the Main Line to open the studio?

HR: I have family in Wayne and I realized there were no boutique fitness studios to the caliber of what was offered in New York and I really wanted to emulate that here. That was how Plank was founded. Last year when I moved back to the Main Line from New York for several months, I went to every fitness class and studio to see what I liked and what I didn’t like. I combined all those ideas into PLANK. It’s not traditional Pilates by any stretch of the word, so we don’t compete with any Pilates studios in the area. This is really the next generation of working out for people.

MLT: We’ve read that Michelle Obama is a fan of the workout, can we expect to get arms like her if we do the workouts? Or at least get beach-ready by Memorial Day?

HR: A master trainer sent here from Los Angeles trained all of our instructors. Our classes adhere to a maximum of 10 people at a time, so it’s a very intimate workout with a lot of personal attention. We also offer private one-on-one appointments. We can certainly get you beach ready by Memorial Day.
